Objectives
Objective | Description | Subbasin plan | Strategies |
Develop Chinook Scale Age and Stock ID Baselines | Collect and scan enough scale cards from target Chinook stocks in the Grande Ronde subbasin to develop a solid baseline of age and stock identifcation for each stock using automated processes and equipment, proven pattern recognition techniques and proprietary software and algortithms. Refine the baselines so that they can be used for automatically scanning and extacting data from additional scale cards for either historical research and trend analysis or for in-season management. | Grande Ronde | Understand Current Status/Trends/Distribution of Focal Species; Assess Life History/Maintain Genetic Diversity; Assess Effectiveness of Restoration Activities; Monitor Focal Species Spawning Distributions; Assist annual decision making efforts |
Develop Chinook Scale Age and Stock ID Baselines | Collect and scan enough scale cards from target Chinook stocks in the Imnaha subbasin to develop a solid baseline of age and stock identifcation for each stock using automated processes and equipment, proven pattern recognition techniques and proprietary software and algortithms. Refine the baselines so that they can be used for automatically scanning and extacting data from additional scale cards for either historical research and trend analysis or for in-season management. | Imnaha | Eval and Update Imnaha Adult Abundance and Life History; Assess Life History and Maintain Genetic Diversity; Monitor Focal Species Spawning Distributions; Determine/Compare Life-Stage Specific Survival Rates; Assist annual decision making efforts |
Develop Chinook Scale Age and Stock ID Baselines | Collect and scan enough scale cards from target Chinook stocks in the Imnahasubbasin to develop a solid baseline of age and stock identifcation for each stock using automated processes and equipment, proven pattern recognition techniques and proprietary software and algortithms. Refine the baselines so that they can be used for automatically scanning and extacting data from additional scale cards for either historical research and trend analysis or for in-season management. | Willamette | Assess general population status/trends within subbasin and systemwide; Monitor focal species survival; Coordinate local monitoring and develop public-private partnerships; Standardize monitoring design and analysis; Assist annual decision making efforts |
Greatly Increase Speed of Scale Analaysis | By deveoping baselines for scale age and stock id analysis and using automated scale scanning and review techniques we can scan hundreds of scale cards per day (at 10 fish per card), extract pattern information to age and determine stock id of the fish and create reporting protocols much faster than humans can do. This increases the number of cards and fish that can be sampled and analyzed, reduces cost per unit and increases statistical rigor for management of the stocks. | Grande Ronde | Assist annual decision making efforts in a cost effective way |
Historic and In-Season Scale Use Via Automation | By automating the process of process of extracting scale age and stock id information, by increaseing the number of cards and fish analyde per day (by orders of magnitude), and by increasing the statistical rigor of the resulting data (by having much larger samples sizes) we allow managers to have access to data for backward looking trends (for example, to determine the results of ther recent supplementation efforts) or to conduct in-season management much quicker and with more scientific confidence. | Grande Ronde | Understand Current Status/Trends/Distribution of Focal Species; Assess Life History/Maintain Genetic Diversity; Assess Effectiveness of Restoration Activities; Monitor Focal Species Spawning Distributions; Assist annual decision making efforts |
