I am interested in methods that would lessen our CURRENT (not only future) dependence on coal-fired power plants for energy; as illustrated on page 10-9 of the online draft, coal power plants account for 88% of the region's greenhouse gas emissions. I also wonder what the effect these coal-powered plants have on seafood and wildlife, given reports of mercury and contaminants in the rivers, seafood, and wildlife.
What policies can we enact right away to lessen this pollution, not only curb its growth? Is it possible to re-fit coal plants to use a different source of energy?
Wouldn't it be beneficial levy carbon taxes to pay for the installment of solar photovoltaics or similar (solar is mentioned in page 6-2 of the online draft)?
