Comment from Smith, Jeff

We are entering an era that demands we change the way we generate and use energy. The era of cheap energy is over. And we should ensure that the United States never goes to war again to secure its energy future in hostile nations while our region, the Northwest, has an abundance of energy efficiency and renewable energy resources that will help the region meet future energy demand here at home without impairing clean water and air. I believe we should adopt an energy plan that: 1. Preserves strong energy efficiency and renewable energy targets, 2. Sets goals to reduce CO2 emissions in the region, (Three states in the region have already done this.) 3. Phases out coal-fired power plants, and 4. Accounts for the future cost of carbon dioxide emissions by including a baseline price estimate for carbon.
